soprano Bronwyn Douglass

Soprano, Bronwyn Douglass has been praised for her "rich, warm tone" and "quietly radiant presence" by Limelight Magazine, who have also featured her as a "Rising Star" and one of the "Next Generation" of Australian Opera singers.

She recently made her Main-Stage Debut as Donna Elvira in David McVicar’s production of Don Giovanni with Opera Australia. She was described by Paul Nolan from Sydney Arts Guide as a “focussed and fiery Donna Elvira… [who] commands the stage space in any scene with a pointed purpose.”

Bronwyn began working with Opera Australia in January 2020. She made her solo concert debut for Opera Australia in March 2022, stepping in to perform the role of Anna Kennedy in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda in Concert. She also performed as a Page in Wagner’s Lohengrin (Melbourne 2022), and will understudy the role of Sieglinde in Wagner’s Die Walküre in Brisbane, December 2023. Bronwyn is currently a member of the Opera Australia Chorus and looks forward to performing throughout the 2023 season. 

 

Having previously worked as a mezzo-soprano, roles for other companies have included: Rosina in The barber of Seville and Olga in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin for Co-Opera, Flora in Verdi’s La traviata for Opera New England, Suzuki in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly for Opera Projects Sydney, 2nd Witch in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas for Brisbane Baroque Festival and Miss Baggott in The Little Sweep for The Australian Festival of Chamber Music.

 

Concert highlights include Chorus Oz: Ode to Joy (Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Mozart’s Mass in C) with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs (broadcast on ABC), Handel’s Messiah with Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Philharmonia Choirs, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Tudor Portraits with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Willoughby Symphony Orchestra, Opera Under the Stars with Teddy Tahu Rhodes, and Opera Galas with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, The Queensland Choir and The Brisbane Festival.

 

Bronwyn is the proud winner of some of Australia’s most prestigious awards. In 2017, Bronwyn was a finalist in almost every major Australian Opera competition and won The Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award and The Opera Foundation for young Australians Lady Fairfax New York Scholarship. She was also a finalist in the Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship (2018 and 2019), The Opera Foundation for young Australians Deutsche Oper Berlin Award (2018) and placed second in The More than Opera: German-Australian Opera Grant (2019). 

 

Bronwyn holds a Bachelor of Music from the Australian National University School of Music and a Masters of Music from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. She also attended the Lisa Gasteen National Opera School (2013-2015), the Melba Opera Trust (2016-2017), and the Georg Solti Accademia di Bel Canto, Tuscany (2018).
